We bought Lantern House in November 2007, as a family holiday home and have set the house up with friends and families in mind. We hope guests find Lantern House to be comfortable, relaxing and well equipped for a variety of ages. Groups, families and pets are welcomed but the house is non-smoking and we would not recommend the house to people who struggle with the stairs as there are steps down into the house and the living quarters are on all levels of the four storey property.
The History of Lantern House
Lantern House was built in 1826 for a Sea Captain’s Widow, so that she would be able to sit and look out to sea, where she lost her dearly beloved.
Lantern House is named such because of the fantastic view of Lantern Hill and St Nicholas’ Chapel – the oldest working beacon in the British Isles.
The house is a classic example of Regency architecture. You will notice the distinctive period features throughout the house.
The cantilever staircase is an engineering feat and has been admired by architects and structural engineers.
Coronation Terrace is one of the oldest and was one of the grandest streets in Ilfracombe. Lantern House was built as a residence and the rest of the terrace included The Assembly Rooms and the Masonic Lodge. In its heyday, Coronation Terrace had a smart promenade that ran the length of the terrace , where the back gardens are now, so the back of the properties were in fact the front.
